In the past year, we have witnessed trends of global transformation across industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The worldwide increase in human knowledge despite limited physical mobility, unhindered and expansive communication channels have been facilitating the transfer of knowledge across continents. Communication is one of the underlining frameworks of such global transformation that also reinforces public opinion on global issues.

The Asian Network for Public Opinion Research (ANPOR) has been an important venue for scholars, practitioners, journalists, and students from various countries to participate and contribute to the betterment of Asian societies through the lens of public opinion, journalism, and communication research since 2012. Since the founding of the Asia-Pacific Communication Alliance (APCA) in 2018, this organization of national and regional organizations, which includes ANPOR as one of its members, has facilitated communication among communication scholars on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

Members of the global community are in the process of transformation to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. ANPOR and APCA are also riding this challenging wave to survive.

As academic communities, ANPOR and APCA offer the venue for scholars to meet and expand their relationship regularly. Throughout the past seven years, the ANPOR annual conference has successfully crafted friendships and collaborations among scholars and institutions, not only in Asia but also in other regions. To keep the spirit of ANPOR and APCA in this time of limited physical mobility, we will cherish our tradition in the virtual world of the 2020 Joint ANPOR Annual Conference/APCA Annual Conference. 

The previous ANPOR conferences in Seoul, Niigata, Bangkok, Battambang/Siem Reap, Shanghai, Bandung, and Chiangmai have all been a great success, drawing participants from more than 20 countries. Ideas, research, and cooperation have been the fruit of our gatherings. We have indeed come a long way since our establishment and have steadily grown. The network’s journal – the Asian Journal for Public Opinion Research (AJPOR) – has now been indexed in the Korean Citation Index database, and Scopus and will continue to be listed in other world ranking databases.

To commemorate the 8th year of ANPOR and the 3rd year of APCA, you are cordially invited to submit abstracts and papers to present at the online conference.  The theme of our conference this year is “Measuring, Understanding, and Communicating Public Opinion in Unprecedented Times”.

Thus the 2020 ANPOR-APCA Annual Conference hopes to engage academics from across the regions within the central theme of public opinion and multicultural communication.

* Non-member rate includes membership to ANPOR for 2020. We recommend becoming ANPOR member before registering for the conference. This will reduce your overall cost.

Individual Presentation Types

Oral Presentations

This is the most popular presentation type, and one that most presenters prefer. A 10-15 minute standalone presentation, with 3-5 minutes for Q and A, is scheduled in a session of usually two or three other presenters, who act as the main respondents to your presentation. These presentations are scheduled as parallel sessions and are advertised and open to other conference participants in the conference program.

Poster Presentations

A poster is a more informal way of presenting as it allows presenters to give a quick overview of their work but to tailor the focus to the individual or small group in front of the poster. It is a more conversational way of presenting and is particularly popular in the sciences and social sciences, where research is data-driven.

Virtual Presentations

As part of our internationalizing mission and commitment to accessibility, we are dedicated to providing platforms that make presentation and publishing possible for everyone. ANPOR’s purpose-built online platform provides structured accountability and reporting for conference participation and attendance, both physical and virtual.

Virtual presenters enjoy all of the following:

  • Presentation published in ANPOR’s Online Video Archive
  • Final Paper published in the Conference Proceedings (optional)
  • Listing in the Online Program/Abstract Book
  • Rigorous double-blind peer review acceptance standards
  • Real-time engagement and interaction
  • Access to plenary presentations via live stream and to PDFs of plenary slides

The Virtual Presentation Process

To present your research in the conference as a Virtual Presenter, have your abstract first pass a double-blind peer review. To submit a paper, go to ANPOR’s online submission system.

If accepted for presentation at the conference, ANPOR invites authors to register, participate and publish in the following way:

  1. Register as a Virtual Presenter on the conference website. Upon payment of the registration fee, your attendance at the conference will be confirmed.
  2. Create your presentation video and upload it via the ANPOR Submission and Review System. The style of the video is up to you. Some delegates choose to record themselves presenting, while others convert a PowerPoint presentation into a video. Your presentation video will then be added to ANPOR’s Online Video Archive where it will remain indefinitely.
  3. Participate online by watching the dedicated live stream and by joining dedicated online conference sessions.*
  4. Submit your Final Paper to the Conference Proceedings (optional), which are archived and made publicly available on the ANPOR online conference proceedings.
  5. Receive a hard copy of your Digital Certificate of Presentation.

Live-Stream Presentations

Many people around the world are moving meetings, classrooms and events online, and ANPOR is now offering the option to present online, via Zoom. This is an exciting new opportunity for scholars around the world to engage with an international audience without the need to travel.

Live-stream presentations give speakers the opportunity to avoid expenses and time required to travel, reduce their carbon footprint, and share ideas online. Additionally, many of the same benefits enjoyed by presenters at traditional in-person conferences are also available to online presenters, including presenting one’s work to an international audience and engaging in Q&A, publishing in the Conference Proceedings, and participating in discussions with other scholars around the world.

The Live-Stream Presentation Process

To present your research at the conference as a Live-Stream Presenter, have your abstract first pass a double-blind peer review. To submit, go to ANPOR’s online submission system.

If accepted for presentation at the conference, ANPOR invites authors to register, participate and publish in the following way:

  1. Register as a Live-Stream Presenter on the conference website. Upon payment of the registration fee, your attendance at the conference will be confirmed.
  2. Watch the Demo Video, download the Zoom app, and join a test meeting.
  3. Before the conference, get a link from the organizers to join your session and information on how to watch the live plenary session.
  4. Participate online by watching the dedicated live stream and by joining dedicated online conference sessions.
  5. Present and participate in your scheduled live-stream session.
  6. Submit your Final Paper to the Conference Proceedings (optional), which are archived and made publicly available on the ANPOR online conference proceedings.
  7. Receive a hard copy of your Digital Certificate of Presentation.
  • All participants (including distinguished lecturers, discussants, invited speakers) who wish to give a talk or present a poster must submit an abstract.
  • Decision (Accepted/Rejected) will be notified to sender soon after the submission is made.
  • Only online submission will be subject to review.
  • The Abstract should be 500 words long in English.
  • The Abstract should include keywords/phrases.
  • Late submission will not be accepted.
  • All the Abstracts (even for the Poster sessions) of accepted presentations will be included in the Conference Guidebook.
  • The editorial team reserves the right to edit general information and format of abstracts for standardization.
  • Deadline for abstract submission is November 13th, 2020.

All Presenters, Participants, and Attendees are required to register and pay their registration fee before the final registration deadline.

There are two payment options available in ANPOR-APCA Annual Conference 2020. You can pay your registration fee through:

  • Online or Transfer payment system for THAI participants.
  • Online payment system for international participants.

Before making the payment for the Conference using any of the above methods, please register online and select your registration fee.

Asian Network for Public Opinion Research (ANPOR)

The Asian Network for Public Opinion Research (ANPOR) was officially established on November 28, 2012, by scholars and experts in public opinion research coming from 9 different Asian countries and regions. The aims and objectives of ANPOR are:

  • a) to promote in each country or region in Asia the right to conduct and publish scientific research or practical analysis on what the citizens at large and organized or unorganized groups think and how this thinking is influenced by various factors or influences decisions and opinions,
  • b) to promote the knowledge and application of scientific methods in this objective,
  • c) to assist and promote the development and publication of public opinion research in Asia,
  • d) to promote worldwide the publication of public opinion research on Asia,
  • e) to promote international cooperation and exchange among academic, commercial, or political researchers, journalists, and political actors, as well as between the representatives of the different scientific disciplines.
  • f) to engage in any kind of activity directly or indirectly supporting the above mentioned activities.

ANPOR’s activities include professional meetings and publications, encouraging high professional standards, promoting improved research techniques, informing journalists about the appropriate forms of publishing poll results, observing the democratic process and use of polls in elections, promoting personnel training, coordinating international polls, and maintaining close relations with other international and regional research associations.

Founding officers of ANPOR includes President Jantima Kheokao from Thailand, Vice President Xie Yungeng from China and Secretary-Treasurer Jong-Seok Byun from South Korea.


Asia-Pacific Communication Alliance (APCA)

In the fall of 2018, a group of scholars from various communication and journalism organizations from the Asia-Pacific region met in China to discuss the possibility of working together. Recognizing that international cooperation between these various organizations could facilitate training of journalists and scholars internationally and promote best practices throughout the region, these scholars suggested creating an alliance. Thus, the Asia-Pacific Communication Alliance (APCA) was born.

Rather than an organization of individual scholars, APCA is an organization of organizations.

APCA plans to conduct events on a regular basis and encourages international collaborations and cooperation. In addition, APCA member organizations may use the upcoming events section of this website to let others know about their respective conferences and events, enabling more cross-cultural sharing of information.

All registration is non-cancellation, and no refund will be issued. In the case of force majeure, refunds may be issued upon the discretion of ANPOR Council. Any refunds will be subjected to a 30 (thirty) percent processing fee, and the membership fee will be retained.

During the event, ANPOR 2020 official photographers will be taking photographs, recording video or making audio recordings to maintain records. The pictures, videos, and sound recordings will be used for Conference-related activities including in the promotional material, in both print and electronic format, via the Internet, ANPOR websites and social media to publicize our Conference. In no way will they be used for commercial purposes.

Any redistribution, reproduction of part or all of the contents in any form is prohibited other than the following:

  • You may copy the content to individual third parties for their personal use, but only if you acknowledge the website as the source of the material.
